Seniors at Broadway Proper senior living in Tucson, Arizona are finding new ways to stay connected to friends and family. Take a closer look at how our residents are using technology to stay connected, and why harnessing the power of technology is more important than ever in keeping seniors engaged and active.

Increased Tech Use Among Seniors

As the world becomes more physically separated, technology is helping us stay connected across social distancing guidelines. Outdated stereotypes lead us to believe that seniors do not want or can not use technology. However, recent polls are showing that advanced technology and high-tech devices can improve the quality of life for seniors, helping them remain more independent for longer.

According to a survey from the AARP, seniors are using technology more than ever.

  • 90% of smartphone owners over the age of 50 use their device to send texts or emails.
  • Over 70% of adults over the age of 50 have a social media account.
  • 91% of seniors with devices use technology to stay in touch with friends and family.
  • 55% of seniors 70+ own a smartphone.

Benefits of Technology Use for Seniors

Over the past few months, our residents have seen how technology can improve their quality of life. As we have faithfully followed health protocols, our residents and our staff are increasingly relying on the following technology to engage and interact with each other and our families.

Video Chatting

Phone calls are great, but video calls are even better. More than a voice on the phone, video calls allow the users to see each other in real-time, capturing reactions, emotions, and the subtle nuances of conversation often missed over the phone. This is a great way for seniors to stay in touch with family and friends who live near and far with some seniors even setting up regular video chats with family members.  It’s easy to use and can be done on various tech devices, including smartphones, laptops, and tablets.

Medication Reminders

Today’s tech-savvy seniors are not relying on colored pillboxes to take their medication. Smartphones, apps, and watches help ensure that seniors are taking the right medications at the correct time. Apps like MediSafe and WebMD are both user-friendly and reliable ways to manage medications. With alarms that are set once, technology can remind seniors to take certain medications at certain times, alleviating some of the stress that comes from missing medications.

Social Media

With over 70% of adults over the age of 50 (and 69% of seniors 65 and older) having a social media account, there is no doubt that this is a powerful platform for seniors. By uploading thoughts, photos, videos, seniors can share their daily lives with friends and family. Done on their own time, social media posts can be made when convenient and are a great way for seniors to stay involved with the lives of children and grandchildren.

Food and Grocery Delivery

Food delivery and grocery delivery can bring food right to seniors’ homes, eliminating the need for grocery shopping and helping seniors stay at home and follow social distancing guidelines. Apps such as UberEats, InstaCart, GrubHub, and more are making it easier than ever for seniors to get the food they want when they want it.
